MA.TT New Summer Design — Matt Mullenweg

web design - Fri, 06/25/2010 - 17:29

As you can tell, it is very inspired by the pop art of Roy Lichtenstein, an idea that came to me while visiting the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C. last year, and again at SFMOMA in November. The idea was beautifully executed by designer Nicolò Volpato (who has now done 3 of the past 4 designs for Ma.tt) and coded up by Otto.

The header is a lot smaller, the graphics should load much faster since they’re simpler, and there have also been a few tweaks throughout the site to make it feel a bit speedier. Instead of image hacks like I’ve used in my past few designs I’m now using Typekit for pretty much everything, which feels nice.

New Google patent: the reasonable surfer and your links

web design - Wed, 06/23/2010 - 11:32

Last month, Google was granted a patent that states that the different links on a linking page have a different effect on the linked pages. How does this affect your website and what do you have to do to secure your rankings?

What is the patent about?

The patent describes that the value of a link seems to be based on the probability that a web surfer would click on the link. Here’s the summary from the patent application:

“Systems and methods consistent with the principles of the invention may provide a reasonable surfer model that indicates that when a surfer accesses a document with a set of links, the surfer will follow some of the links with higher probability than others. This reasonable surfer model reflects the fact that not all of the links associated with a document are equally likely to be followed. [...]

Examples of unlikely followed links may include ‘Terms of Service’ links, banner advertisements, and links unrelated to the document.”

When Google finds links on a web page, it classifies the links. Some links on the indexed page have more value than others.

Google Says: We Are “The Biggest Kingmaker On This Earth”

web design - Fri, 06/18/2010 - 08:47

The Telegraph interviewed Google’s Amit Singhal and Udi Manber about the Caffeine launch.

In that interview, Amit Singhal, Google’s head of core ranking, said something interesting. He said that Google is “the biggest kingmaker on this Earth.” Kingmaker is a term used to describe someone or something that has great influence on a topic. For Google to describe themselves as “the biggest kingmaker” is an important point.

I personally do not think Google said it that way to be egotistical, rather the opposite. Google knows how important they have become in influencing the world based on the organic search results and they don’t take that responsibility lightly.

Amit Singhal told The Telegraph: “We deal with those responsibilities by having very concrete principles,” says Singhal. “All rankings are decided algorithmically, and the focus is on user benefit, not advertiser or commercial benefit. We ask ourselves, ‘Can a random company who does not want to be part of any Google system be harmed by a change we’re proposing?’ If they are, we won’t do it.”

Now, I know many SEOs and Webmasters that would laugh at this statement. What do you think?

Summer Bike Safety Tips for Chicago Cyclists

web design - Mon, 06/14/2010 - 14:51

Summer Bike Safety Tips for Chicago Cyclists

Bicycling magazine once named it the best big city for bicycling in North America. The mayor is an avid cyclist. There is a citywide goal to become the “most bicycle-friendly” in the country by 2015. With 100 miles of bike lanes, 50 miles of off-street trails and 10,000 bike racks (the most in America), Chicago is definitely one bicycle-friendly city.

City officials have compelling reasons to do more. As Mayor Richard M. Daley’s ambitious Bike 2015 plan points out, Chicago motorists lose hours of potentially productive time in traffic, and spend an average of 17 percent of their budgets on transportation costs alone. Additionally, with more than 60 percent of all adults in the city overweight or obese, increased reliance on bicycling to meet transportation needs might help to promote healthier, more active lifestyles for people who don’t have time to exercise.

The Latest Web Designer Salary Data Indicates A Potential To Earn Thousands Of Dollars In Wages

web design - Wed, 06/09/2010 - 05:52

WEBWIRE – Thursday, June 03, 2010

Denver, Colorado — Web designer salary data as published by Payscale.com will stun most people. According to the salary information, the lowest salary in this profession is $30,502 in a year. This means that a fresher just out of college and without any experience will earn more than $2,500 every month. Now, in most places in the US, this is decent money by any standards. The salary data published by Salary.com tells us that the average salary earned in this industry is a staggering $50,000 every year. Payscale.com also seems to agree with this finding. All this data has been published in detail on webdesignersalarydata.com.

It seems that there are lots of jobs for web designers at various levels. The highest salaries are, however, offered by government agencies – a qualified person working for the government can earn as much as $57,148 on an average. Private design companies come next. According to the released salary chart, the average salary offered by them is $43,264. There is a lot of potential for self employed professionals in this industry as well. On an average, today, they are making $31,477 per annum.

The best thing for those who want to strike it rich in this industry is that, no formal education is really required. But the web designer salary data shows that a person with a bachelor or associate qualification in web design tends to do much better. A certification in web designing is also an added advantage and ensures higher salaries. It is important, therefore, to get the necessary qualifications and strive to earn $71,250 every year, the maximum salary as per the web designer salary data.
